Aboudia made "Famille Seule" with what looks like acrylics and maybe some oil pastels, and what strikes me right away is the rawness of the marks. You can really see the process, like a window into the artist's energy. The surface is built up with layers, thick in some spots, thin and transparent in others. There's a real physicality to the paint, it's almost like you can feel the artist pushing and pulling the medium around. Look at the way the blue paint drips down from the figures' clothing, these are moments where the artist seems to be letting go. It reminds me a bit of Jean-Michel Basquiat, in the sense of how raw and immediate the work is, but Aboudia has his own unique voice, rooted in his own experiences and culture. And that's what makes art so exciting, it's an ongoing conversation. We see the world in all of it's messy beauty.
