Jonathan Borofsky made this drawing, Upside Down Flowers, with graphite on paper. Have you ever thought about how gravity affects flowers in a vase? Borofsky did, and here they are, suspended, against their will. Poor little posies! The vase seems to float too, or perhaps it is sinking. I wonder what Borofsky was thinking when he made this drawing. Maybe he was feeling a little upside down himself. The tonal drawing has a beautiful softness to it. He seems to be saying that nothing is ever really fixed. What seems solid might actually be in flux. It reminds me a little of the drawings of Giorgio Morandi, but with a more playful twist. It's like he's reminding us not to take everything so seriously. Sometimes, the best way to see things is to turn them upside down!
