The Virgin and Child with Saint John on a Cloud 16th-17th century
Dimensions 16.1 x 10.5 cm (6 5/16 x 4 1/8 in.)
Curator: This is Odoardo Fialetti’s "The Virgin and Child with Saint John on a Cloud," housed here at the Harvard Art Museums. Editor: Its ethereal nature is immediately striking; the figures seem to float, created with delicate line work, almost like lace. Curator: Yes, Fialetti masterfully utilizes the etching technique to create dynamic tonal variations. The clouds themselves are meticulously rendered, providing a soft contrast to the linear detailing of the figures. Editor: How fascinating to consider the tools he would have used – the acids, the plates, the press. It’s humbling to realize the physical labor involved in creating such an image. Curator: Indeed, there is a clear hierarchy of forms, with the Virgin and Child positioned centrally, radiating outwards to the edges. Note how the composition leads the eye to the sacred narrative. Editor: It is interesting to note that this print’s material qualities make it accessible to a wider audience as opposed to, say, a painting. The reproduction changes the artwork's social value! Curator: True, and in doing so, the work invites us to contemplate its very form. Editor: It makes one consider the changing role of art through different social contexts.
