Auguste Danse created this print, *Medaille met portret van Jan Walravenz uit 1563,* in 1884. The original medal was created in 1563, during the fraught years of the Reformation. Jan Walravenz's story is compelling; here's a man who, by 1563, has established himself as a doctor. We see this reflected in the inscription “CORONNE DES DOCTEURS.” His dress suggests a man of stature and wealth. Yet, in the Netherlands, this image would have been politically charged, reflecting Walravenz’s position amidst religious upheaval. Danse's 1884 print invites us to consider how historical figures like Walravenz have been remembered. Is it an act of preservation, an inquiry into identity, or a statement about the endurance of certain values through changing times? The emotional weight of this piece lies in the connection it fosters between the viewer and a distant, yet familiar past.
