Editor: Here we have "Strijd tussen Nederlanders en plaatselijke bevolking," or "Fight Between the Dutch and Locals," an etching from 1676. It depicts what appears to be a violent clash on a tropical shore. The detail is incredible. Honestly, it gives me a slightly unsettling feeling…like witnessing a forgotten piece of a painful history. What are your initial thoughts when you look at it? Curator: Unsettling is definitely a word I’d use, too. It’s like finding a postcard from a very awkward vacation. This piece throws us headfirst into the Dutch Golden Age’s less-than-golden colonial exploits. Can you see how the composition pulls your eye? Editor: Yeah, my eyes go to the center first because it is where the clash between the two populations occurs.. Curator: Exactly. Notice how the "civilized" Dutch soldiers are organized in crisp lines, firing in unison while the local population scatters. And then consider what’s emphasized – the ship offshore representing global ambition, looming large. Then there is the exotic, and lush vegetation. A clash of "us versus them", don't you think? It’s an attempt to visually justify dominance, masking the true cost in faraway lands. Editor: It’s chilling to realize that what might have been considered a triumphant historical record back then reads so differently today. I can’t unsee the imbalance now that you’ve pointed it out. Curator: Right? The piece serves as a time capsule, but its message changes depending on who's opening it. The landscape romanticizes while simultaneously, the actions of the soldiers cause anything but a picturesque scene. Editor: Thanks, seeing the picture in the cultural landscape of its history made me notice what is absent from the picture. It's something I will be more aware of as I go on. Curator: And I was reminded not to only read the picture but also try and listen to the stories from all perspectives present in the landscape depicted.
