Jan van Huchtenburg made this etching showing soldiers in a landscape in the Netherlands. Although undated, it was likely made in the late 17th or early 18th century. The image is full of visual codes that would have been easily read at the time. Huchtenburg was a Dutch painter and engraver, who specialized in battle scenes. The Dutch Republic was at war for much of the 17th century, and images of military life were common. But it is interesting to note that the soldiers are not shown in battle. Instead, they are resting and relaxing in the countryside, conveying the everyday life of the army, and perhaps commenting on the uneasy relationship between the military and the civilian population. Art historians use a wide range of resources to understand such images, including military records, social histories, and contemporary accounts. The meaning of art is always contingent on its social and institutional context.
