This print of H. Matteüs was made by Jean Frosne in the 17th Century. It is made out of paper, using the technique of engraving. Look closely, and you’ll notice that the material is very present in this work. The network of fine lines etched into the metal plate create areas of shadow and light, and a variety of textures. The controlled hand movements in the engraving process have imbued the artwork with cultural significance. Frosne was working within a well-established tradition, and the engraving technique itself demanded a particular skill and dedication from the printmaker. It's easy to overlook the labor that goes into such prints, but it is important to consider that these engravings were not only artistic expressions but also commodities, created through a complex interplay of artistic skill and a commercial market. By focusing on these details, we can understand the true depth of meaning in this artwork.
