This knife handle, or Kozuka, was created by Gotō Mitsutaka in the 18th century. Carved from metal, it presents a study in contrasts and textures. The dark, minutely textured background throws into sharp relief the smooth, polished form of a resting rat. The artist uses the rectangular shape of the kozuka to its full potential, placing the figure of the rat horizontally. The rodent's form stretches across the surface, its tail almost reaching the edge, creating a dynamic tension within the confined space. The choice of a rat may seem unconventional, yet it underscores the artist’s interest in exploring the beauty in the everyday, challenging traditional aesthetic norms. Notice how the simplicity of the composition enhances the tactile quality of the piece. It's through the manipulation of form and texture that Mitsutaka invites us to reconsider our perceptions of beauty and value.
