Johan Antonie de Jonge made this evocative watercolor of Scheveningen beach, capturing a moment in time with just a few washes of pigment on paper. De Jonge worked quickly, using the fluidity of watercolor to suggest the wet sand and overcast sky. Note how he subtly built up layers of color to create depth, especially in the figures. This approach to painting involves an element of chance, as the artist relinquishes some control to the material itself. The muted palette and loose brushwork suggest a fleeting impression rather than a highly detailed scene. Watercolor as a medium was favored for its portability and immediacy, allowing artists to capture scenes en plein air, or outdoors. The rise of the professional artist, able to travel and set up an easel anywhere, is very much tied to the social context of the time. By emphasizing the materiality and process of watercolor painting, we can appreciate how de Jonge’s Gezicht translates a specific moment into a tangible experience.
