Rupert Bunny painted "On the beach (Royan)" with oil, layering sandy yellows and hazy blues. What strikes me is the way Bunny uses the paint almost like memory itself – soft, a bit blurry, capturing a feeling more than a photographic reality. Look at the seated figure reading her book, notice how the white dress seems to blend with the sand, making her almost one with the beach. The brushwork around her is loose, scumbled, and broken up, suggesting the shifting nature of light and the ephemeral quality of a summer afternoon. It's not about capturing every detail, but about conveying the overall sensory experience. This reminds me a little of Bonnard, who was also interested in capturing intimate, domestic scenes with a similar hazy light and focus on the emotional atmosphere. Bunny’s painting invites us to slow down, breathe in the salty air, and get lost in the dreamy atmosphere.
