Louis Ducros created this watercolour and gouache view of part of the Mare Piccolo, using horizontal bands to achieve a sense of depth and serenity. The composition invites our eye to drift across the tranquil waters, guided by the placement of several small boats. The delicate washes of grey, beige and muted greens, create a harmonious balance between the water and the sky, blurring the distinction between the two. Ducros manipulates the traditional landscape format to explore new relationships between space and perception. The hazy, almost dreamlike quality, destabilizes our sense of perspective. Ducros challenges the viewer to reconsider fixed notions of space and representation. It's not just a depiction of a place, but an invitation to reflect on how we perceive and structure our understanding of the natural world.
