Hendrik van den Helm produced this image of ships in calm waters using pen in gray ink and gray wash, sometime in the mid-19th century. The image presents a tranquil scene, but it speaks to the economic and social importance of maritime activity for the Netherlands. During the Dutch Golden Age, the 17th century, the country became a major naval power and a hub for international trade. By the 19th century, the Dutch still maintained colonies in the East Indies, and the shipping industry remained crucial. The arrangement of the composition, the different sizes and positioning of the boats, seem to reflect the hierarchy of the social classes. This is a seemingly simple image that provides a window into the Dutch society of its time. As art historians, we can research the history of Dutch maritime trade and naval power, as well as the artistic conventions of marine painting, to better understand the complex meanings embedded in this work.
