Heinrich Ulrich created this print filled with objects from the life of Christ. The dominant symbol is of course the cross, bearing the letters 'INRI' and surrounded by instruments of the Passion. Consider the ladder, recalling Christ's descent from the cross, echoing in other contexts such as depictions of the Deposition. Note also the cock, symbol of Peter's denial, and the basin, used by Pilate in washing his hands, absolving himself of responsibility. In their juxtaposition, these symbols, seemingly disparate, are united by a common thread of guilt and redemption. Such symbols are never fixed. They are vessels carrying collective memory and subconscious processes. Each appearance reshapes our understanding, echoing through time, engaging us on a deep, psychological level, laden with centuries of cultural and religious significance. Their cyclical progression echoes through history, constantly evolving.
