This cartouche with inscription was made by Nicolaes de Bruyn in the 17th century using the technique of engraving. The material is key to understanding the artwork. Engraving is an intaglio process, where the design is incised into a metal plate, traditionally copper. The plate is then inked, and the surface wiped clean, leaving ink only in the engraved lines. High pressure is applied to transfer the ink to a sheet of paper, resulting in a print with slightly raised lines. De Bruyn's skill in manipulating the metal plate, combined with the precision of the printing process, allowed for intricate details of scrolling foliage, birds and flowers, and lettering. The design, which contains the phrase "VOLATILIVM VARII GENERIS," perhaps refers to the variety of birds depicted. Ultimately, this print reflects the intersection of artistry, craft, and commerce in 17th-century Europe, demonstrating the value placed on skilled craftsmanship. Understanding its materials and methods allows us to appreciate its cultural significance.
