This is Emil Ost’s 1885 advertisement for J. Graandyk’s book *Wandelingen door Nederland* or *Walks Through the Netherlands*. It was made with various printing techniques. The advert presents a romanticized view of the Dutch landscape, enticing readers to explore their homeland through Graandyk’s writing and P.A. Schipperus's illustrations. In the late 19th century, the Netherlands was undergoing significant social and economic changes. As industrialization increased, there was a growing interest in preserving and celebrating national identity. This advertisement, thus, reflects the cultural values of the time, promoting a sense of national pride and connection to the land. Advertisements like these also reveal the increasing commercialization of leisure and culture. Through this beautiful imagery, Ost speaks to the emerging middle class, offering them a vision of the Netherlands, and a connection to their nation. The advert also evokes an emotional longing for a simpler time, a desire which speaks to the complex relationship between progress and nostalgia.
