François Marius Granet made this watercolor wash, A Cardinal Examining a Painting in a Cloister, sometime in the first half of the 19th century. Granet specialized in light-filled architectural interiors, often of monastic settings, and he returned to this subject repeatedly throughout his career. This painting is fascinating because it reflects the changing relationship between the church and the museum during the artist’s lifetime. During and after the French Revolution, the art holdings of religious orders were often seized and placed in public collections. Here we see a cardinal, traditionally a figure of authority in matters of taste, now an observer and a guest in what was once his domain. To understand this painting better, we might examine exhibition records from the period, or even the artist’s personal correspondence. This will reveal how social forces shape the production and reception of art.
