This is Karel van Mander III's "An Old Man. Allegorical Representation of Sight," an oil on canvas of indeterminate date, housed here at the SMK. The painting's composition is defined by a monochrome palette and the central placement of its subject, an old man, who gazes directly out at us. His face, framed by a soft white beard and wiry hair, is dominated by a pair of round spectacles, drawing our attention to the act of seeing. Given the title, it is tempting to view this as a straightforward representation. Yet, the man's unfocused eyes and the muted tones evoke a more complex idea about vision and perception. Is it about the limitations of sight, or perhaps the wisdom that comes with seeing the world through time-worn eyes? The structure of the piece invites us to contemplate how meaning isn't just seen, but constructed through layers of interpretation. Ultimately, the painting serves as a profound reflection on perception, urging us to look beyond the surface and consider the deeper structures that shape our understanding.

This painting and other works from the collection of the physician and art collector Johan Christian Bodendick were acquired by Statens Museum for Kunst in 1810. The many numbers and labels on the back show that Bodendick was not the only art collector to have owned the painting. One of the collectors marked his ownership with a red wax seal with a coat of arms, another wrote the artist’s name and the registration number “Karl van Mander / No. 100”. Yet another collector has attached a large label paying tribute to the artist in meticulous handwriting: the first and last part of an epic poem by the Dutch poet Cornelis de Bie from the book Het gulden cabinet van de edel vry schilderconst (‘The Golden Cabinet of the Noble Liberal Art of Painting’), published in 1662.
