"Women in Front of a Café, Evening" is a c. 1877 monotype by Edgar Degas, a leading figure in the Impressionist movement. Degas is best known for his depictions of dancers, but he also captured the everyday life of Parisians, as seen in this work. The figures are partially obscured by the atmospheric mist, a characteristic element of Impressionism that conveys a sense of fleeting time and urban life. The work, now housed at the Art Institute of Chicago, is a small yet powerful depiction of an intimate social moment.
