Bernard Willem Wierink created 'Zittend paar' in 1937. The work presents a seated couple framed by an archway and rendered with a distinctive flatness and a deliberate crudeness of form. The texture, achieved through the use of gouache, contributes a tactile quality that invites close inspection. Wierink's method defies traditional illusionism, emphasizing instead the constructed nature of the image. The almost childlike simplicity in the rendering of figures and forms destabilizes established artistic values. The figures and architectural elements are reduced to their most essential forms, and their arrangement evokes a symbolic rather than a literal space. Note the flattening of the perspective and the restricted palette. These choices point to an interest in challenging conventional aesthetic expectations. In doing so, Wierink opens up questions about the nature of representation itself. It invites us to consider how an artwork, through its formal qualities, communicates ideas about simplicity and form.
