Bernard Willem Wierink made this artwork of a couple overlooking an Eastern city with chalk and graphite, probably in the late 19th or early 20th century. The muted colors and soft textures give the image a dreamlike quality, as though the scene exists somewhere between reality and imagination. I can imagine Wierink, sketchbook in hand, trying to capture that feeling of standing on the edge of something new. The couple stands close together, united in their shared experience of this unfamiliar place. They look out over an unknown city; perhaps they are tourists, or maybe they have arrived to start a new life? It makes me wonder what they’re thinking, what their hopes and fears are as they gaze into the distance. The grid marks are still visible, reminding us of the artist's process. It is a reminder that art is not just about the finished product, but also about the journey of creation, which is a process of looking, thinking, and feeling.
