About this artwork

This is an anonymous bottle with floral scroll design made of stoneware with a clear glaze. The vessel's body is divided into two distinct sections, the bulbous roundness of its lower half, and the slender, cylindrical neck, topped with a flared mouth. The floral scroll, rendered in underglaze cobalt blue, appears almost weightless, as if floating across the bottle's surface. Each flower and leaf is delineated with swift, assured strokes, creating a sense of rhythm and movement. Look at the contrast with the stoneware ground, its subtle variations in tone adding depth. The bottle form disrupts our fixed conceptions about decoration and utility. The floral pattern, rather than merely adorning the bottle, integrates seamlessly with its structure. This piece challenges conventional understandings of form and function in ceramic art, inviting us to appreciate its complex interplay between material, design, and execution.
