This nearly 18 inch high jar was made in Puebla, Mexico by the Talavera Poblana. The production of Talavera pottery in Puebla began in the 16th century, following the arrival of Spanish colonizers who brought with them European ceramic traditions. The jar is decorated with blue paint depicting a figure in an exotic landscape. This reflects the historical and cultural context of colonial Mexico, where European and Indigenous artistic traditions merged, often resulting in syncretic styles. The figure depicted in the landscape may reflect the way that non-western people were exoticized. The landscape itself appears lush and abundant, perhaps reflecting how the colonizers viewed the ‘New World’ as a land of great opportunity. This jar serves as a reminder of the complex and often fraught relationship between colonizers and colonized populations, and how cultural exchange can both enrich and distort artistic expression.
