C. J. Cruijff made this photograph of a horse and sledge, probably during a cold winter. You can almost feel the artist thinking about how to capture the scene. Imagine him considering, moment by moment, how the light hits the snow, how the trees reach into the sky, how the breath of the horse fogs in the cold air. The tones are all muted, earthy and brown; a whole world exists in those shades. The textures of the trees are delicate; the sledge is sturdy and functional, and the horse is imposing and strong, contrasted with the vulnerability of the winter landscape. The figures in the sledge look like they're off on an adventure or a mundane errand. I feel like the artist is speaking to me about the beauty of everyday life. Artists are always inspired by one another, building on each other's ideas and processes.
