This print of Saint Stephen, holding a palm and stones, was made by Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert using an engraving technique. The image is achieved by cutting lines into a metal plate, inking the surface, and then wiping it clean so that ink remains only in the incised lines. When pressed to paper, a reversed impression is created. Look closely, and you'll see the artist's virtuosity in varying the density and direction of the lines. This creates tonal contrasts and the illusion of three-dimensionality. Notice the light emanating from Stephen, in contrast to the dark, heavily worked clouds behind him. The drapery is also highly detailed. The amount of work involved in the production process makes the image so rich. Engraving has a long association with commercial printmaking. It was a skilled trade practiced by specialized artisans. In this case, that professional labor has been deployed to devotional ends. It is an eloquent reminder that all works of art depend on carefully chosen materials, and the labor that brings them to life.
