This etching, “Vrouwelijk gezelschap in een berceau,” depicts a scene of a group of women reacting to a man lying on the beach in the foreground. The woman in the center is dressed in a long flowing gown with her hands clasped together in distress. The other women are also seemingly in a state of shock. The scene is set by a rocky cliff with a boat sinking in the distance. This work by Dutch artist Abraham Dircksz. Santvoort, also known as “Santvoort”, was created in 1667 and exemplifies the artist's skillful depiction of human emotion through an evocative composition. The scene is heightened by the use of dramatic lighting and a sense of urgency created by the action on the beach and the sinking ship in the background. This etching, part of the Rijksmuseum collection, highlights the artistic talent of this Dutch Golden Age artist.
