Editor: This mixed-media drawing on paper is called "Wall Painting," and it was made around 1939 by George E. Rhone. It has a sun shape and frame...I find its simplicity so charming, almost like a vintage emblem. What do you make of it? Curator: It does have that old-world heraldic feeling, doesn't it? The limited palette - soft reds and blues - give it an almost dreamlike quality. It’s a decorative piece, no doubt, maybe a study for something larger. That rectangle in the middle is interesting; almost an invitation. Does it make you wonder what would go there? A mirror, a family crest? Editor: Definitely! The blank space is begging for something. I hadn't thought about a crest. Curator: Right? Think about what was happening in 1939… on the precipice of huge global change and turmoil, yet there's this delicate, almost whimsical design. I imagine the artist thinking of making a home a more beautiful place; it's an optimistic touch, a bit like choosing beauty amid uncertainty. It reminds me, strangely enough, of simpler times, even though they probably weren’t. What feelings come up for you when you look at the artwork? Editor: I think it's mostly that sense of optimism, but tinged with maybe… nostalgia? The colors especially create this effect. Curator: Exactly! And notice the little sunburst at the top. Makes me wonder if it's intended to represent light breaking through. Maybe Rhone knew we all needed a little symbol of hope. Editor: That's a lovely thought. I appreciate that there is an open central form, and it feels optimistic in its simplicity. I had not caught on to that the first time I saw the drawing. Curator: Glad to share the journey through our unique insights with you! It always sparks the creative self when viewing art!
