This 1556 engraved title page by Johannes or Lucas van Doetechum is a complex composition of stylized figures and ornament. Four male figures, each with a distinct pose and expression, are integrated into a design of intertwined and looping decorative elements. The title page’s frame is ornamented with scrolling foliage, cherubs, and garlands of fruit. The artwork is a striking example of Mannerist style, a highly decorative and dynamic approach to art that was popular in 16th-century Europe.
