Leonid painted this scene of Faraduro, Portugal, using oil paint. What strikes me is how the bird's eye view and muted palette construct a specific way of seeing this coastal landscape. The paint is applied with a thin, almost translucent quality, which creates a sense of light and atmosphere. If you look closely, you can see the brushstrokes in the waves, each one carefully placed to create the illusion of movement and depth. The way Leonid captures light is pretty impressive, you can almost feel the warmth of the sun on your skin as you look at the beach. But I’m especially drawn to the almost comical parade of figures dotting the shoreline. Each of these tiny marks tells a story, evoking a sense of human presence and activity within the expansive landscape. The distant, detached perspective brings to mind the work of Fairfield Porter, both artists share an interest in capturing the everyday moments of life with a sense of quiet observation. Ultimately, this painting offers a reminder that art is not about perfect representation, it is about the way we experience and interpret the world around us.
