Francisco de Goya presents us with a depiction of "Tobias and the Angel." Here we see Tobias, guided by the archangel Raphael, holding a fish, an essential attribute that alludes to the healing powers it possesses. The angel, bathed in divine light, stretches out a hand to Tobias. Such gestures of guidance and protection can be traced back to ancient depictions of Hermes as a psychopomp, guiding souls. The act of bearing a fish carries its own weight. In early Christian symbolism, the fish, or "ichthys," served as a secret symbol of faith and recognition during times of persecution. The image of the fish reappears in numerous other contexts through time. In Goya’s image, we see an expression of reassurance, offering solace and evoking a primal sense of protection. This composition allows viewers to tap into collective memories of guidance and protection. The symbols echo through time, finding new life in the hands of Goya.
