Dankvart Dreyer made this study of thistles using pencil and brown ink on paper. At first glance, it looks like a quick sketch, but there is something in the detailed observation of this prickly plant that rewards a closer look. The artist's tools and techniques play a huge role. Dreyer captured the textures of the thistles, from their spiky leaves to their budding flower heads. Notice how the pencil lines are light and exploratory, while the brown ink adds weight and definition. The translucency of the paper is used as a deliberate choice, allowing the viewer to see the layers of drawing. The visible, tentative lines invite us to consider the time and attention required. In rendering a common thistle, Dreyer elevates the everyday. He is using traditional art materials - paper, pencil, ink - to create a portrait of a plant normally dismissed as a weed. Dreyer's choice of subject and the intimate scale of the drawing blurs the lines between fine art and the close observation of the natural world.
