Editor: So this is Clarkson Stanfield's "The Semaphore, Portsmouth," an engraving of an image in the Tate. It feels so detailed, almost overwhelming. What do you make of it? Curator: Isn't it wonderful? It reminds me of being a kid and building model ships. The lines pull you in, don't they? Stanfield clearly knew his ships, but he also captures the sheer energy of Portsmouth. Does the detail distract, or does it add to the sense of place, do you think? Editor: I think it adds, definitely. I hadn't really considered the sense of place until now. Curator: Exactly! And it's not just a visual record; it's a feeling, a breath of salty air, a moment in time meticulously rendered. I learn something new every time I look at it. Editor: Me too, especially about seeing a place through art.
