Louis Marcoussis made "Poire verte et couteau", with what looks like oil or acrylic paint, and a real knack for seeing things in a fresh way. I can just imagine him puzzling over how to show the essence of a pear and a knife, not just how they look, but what they mean, maybe playing with the shapes, colours and textures until they felt just right. The way he’s layered those stripes and dots, it’s like he’s turning the objects inside out, showing us their hidden patterns. It’s like he’s saying, “Hey, look closer! There’s more to see here than you think!” The knife slicing through the pear becomes more than just a still life – it's a meditation on form, space, and the sheer joy of looking. You know, it reminds me a bit of Braque or Picasso, all those cubist cats, except Marcoussis brings his own quirky sense of humour to the party. It’s like he’s winking at us from across the canvas, inviting us to join in the fun. And isn’t that what art’s all about – a bunch of folks riffing off each other, trying to make sense of the world, one brushstroke at a time?
