Carlos Cruz-Diez created Transchromie with vertical bands of yellow, green, blue, and orange. Imagine him in the studio, or even on site, figuring out how to hang these colored strips of what looks like plexiglass. These colors make me think of summer, and maybe that’s what he was thinking too, or remembering, when he made this work. I wonder what it felt like when he put the first strip up? Artists often work by intuition, trusting the process to lead them. It's interesting how the bands create new colors when they overlap, like when you mix paint on a canvas. You know, artists have always been in conversation with each other, across time, inspiring new ideas. I bet Cruz-Diez was thinking about other color theorists, like Josef Albers or the Impressionists, when he made this. Color is so evocative and exciting. We can see the world in so many ways, and I love how artists embrace ambiguity and uncertainty to allow for multiple readings.
