Jim Lambie made "Tape Floor" from vibrant vinyl tape, a common material, yet transformed through careful labor. Lambie applies the tape in dense, parallel lines directly to the floor, creating swirling patterns. It’s a low-tech process, requiring patience and precision more than specialized tools. The inherent qualities of the tape – its sheen, its slightly raised surface – give the work a tactile, almost sculptural presence, which can only be achieved in situ. The choice of tape is telling. It's an everyday product, inexpensive and mass-produced, embodying the aesthetics of consumer culture. Yet, the labor-intensive application elevates it, prompting us to reconsider the value we assign to materials and processes. Lambie engages with the legacy of minimalist sculpture, and the readymade, while challenging traditional hierarchies between art and craft, labor and leisure, questioning how these distinctions shape our understanding of art itself.
