Richard Diebenkorn made this striking portrait on paper with ink; it’s titled ‘bust of a female model’. The way Diebenkorn uses ink is really fascinating. Look at how the density of the marks changes – in some areas, like around the eyes and chest, the lines are almost scribbled and thick, creating depth and shadow. Elsewhere, he uses single, clean lines, suggesting form with incredible economy. It gives the drawing a real sense of immediacy, like it was captured in a fleeting moment. This piece reminds me of Matisse's drawings, but with a raw, restless energy. It feels like Diebenkorn is thinking through the image, letting us see his process. The slightly wonky perspective and unfinished quality add to the drawing’s charm. For me, art is about embracing that ambiguity.
