Hryhorii Havrylenko made this female image with what looks like ink on paper. The simple lines are striking, and feel economical, like he's getting to the essence of the figure with just a few strokes. There’s this lovely cross-hatching that gives depth to the hair, contrasting with the smooth, continuous lines that define her face and clothing. The artist uses line weight to emphasize the subject. It's interesting how much emotion can be conveyed with so little. I'm reminded of Agnes Martin's subtle drawings, which also find power in simplicity. Like a conversation, art is about finding your own voice, responding to what came before, and adding something new to the mix.
