Curatorial notes
Adolph Kittendorff created this print called "Kyllingerne; Ederkoppen" sometime during the 19th century. Kittendorff was active during a period when the Danish art scene was exploring themes of national identity and romanticism. The print features two distinct images: one depicts a hen with her chicks, and the other shows a spiderweb on a tree stump. The juxtaposition invites us to consider themes of nurture, nature, and the interconnectedness of life. A hen protecting her young ones can be viewed as a maternal emblem, highlighting the role of care and protection within the natural world. A spiderweb, often a symbol of both creation and entrapment, adds a layer of complexity. Through his delicate renderings, Kittendorff draws our attention to the intricate details of the natural world, prompting reflection on our relationship with it.
