Iain Baxter& made this work using painted canvas strips adhered to the wall, alongside a painted square canvas. Baxter&’s "Extended Noland" takes the visual language of geometric abstraction and literally pulls it off the canvas, extending it into the three-dimensional space of the room. The painted canvas strips evoke the brushstrokes of painting but also have a sculptural presence. The artist carefully arranges these elements, playing with the interplay between order and chance. There is a meticulousness of craft in the cutting, painting and placing of the strips, in strong contrast with the freedom and dynamism of the artist’s gesture. By combining painting and sculpture, "Extended Noland" challenges traditional boundaries. It invites us to think about how artists can push the limits of materials and processes. The social significance lies in the democratization of art, by embracing unexpected materials. The labor is evident in the manual processes. By breaking down barriers between art forms, Baxter& encourages a more expansive view of what art can be.
