Andre Derain made this painting, Still life on the red table, and I love how he’s not being too precious about it, you know? It's like he’s saying, "Here are some colors, some shapes, let's see what happens." The paint is laid on thick, almost like frosting on a cake, especially in that white cloth. You can practically feel the texture. Look at how the red of the table bleeds into the grey of the tablecloth. There’s a real physicality to it. And those dark lines outlining everything? They give it this raw, almost childlike energy. It reminds me a bit of Van Gogh, that same passion for color, that willingness to just go for it. Art isn't about perfection. It’s about feeling, about doing, about the conversation between the artist and the canvas. And in this painting, Derain is really talking.
