This pot stand was crafted by the Tikar people. Its circular form and carved decorations give it a sculptural presence. The piece consists of a spherical base adorned with a ring of stylized faces, each separated by vertical bands. Above, a band of chevrons adds another layer of texture. A small, human-like figure sits on the rim, acting as a kind of guardian. The materiality of the dark clay, with its rough, textured surface, speaks to the earth from which it was formed. The dark hue absorbs light, emphasizing the carved details. We can interpret the arrangement of faces and patterns as a visual language. The faces, each identical, might represent ancestors or spirits, suggesting a symbolic function beyond mere utility. The pot stand thus operates on multiple levels, serving as a practical object and a canvas for cultural expression. Consider how the interplay of form and decoration transforms this functional object into a compelling artwork.
