This hanging scroll, "Longing from Afar," was created by Karasumaru Mitsuhiro in Japan with ink on paper. Notice the vertical composition, dominated by a column of calligraphy. The thick, black ink contrasts sharply against the neutral paper, immediately drawing the eye. The characters vary in size and weight, creating a rhythmic visual texture. Sparse, evocative brushstrokes depict natural elements that punctuate the text, suggesting a landscape shrouded in mist. Mitsuhiro was known for his distinctive calligraphic style, which blended traditional Japanese aesthetics with his own innovations. Here, the arrangement of text and image can be seen as a reflection of Zen principles, where empty space is just as important as the filled areas, creating a sense of depth and contemplation. The varying shades of ink manipulate and challenge our perceptions. This scroll exemplifies how the formal elements of line, space, and texture converge to evoke a mood of longing and reflection.
The waka, entitled “Longing from Afar,” reads: Should I ask or not ask, would it be useful likestirrups from Musashi'I have thought for a long timebut I am still at a loss…
