This "Untitled Book of Erotica" was made by Utagawa Toyokuni I sometime between 1769 and 1825, using woodblock printing. This technique, called *ukiyo-e* in Japan, involves carving an image into a block of wood, applying ink to the raised surface, and then pressing paper against it. The layered effect seen here results from applying multiple colors, each requiring a separate block. Look closely and you can see where the registration of the blocks is slightly off. Despite this technical challenge, the result is wonderfully expressive, with subtle gradations of tone. Woodblock printing was a commercially viable process, allowing for mass production and distribution of images. This made art accessible to a wider audience, moving it away from the elite circles that traditionally controlled artistic production. This democratization of art through material and process is really key to its cultural significance, inviting us to appreciate the artistry and skill involved.
