Curatorial notes

This photograph, framed in an ornate Art Nouveau style, captures an unknown young woman, possibly Madame Modjeska, holding a fan and draped with a shawl. The fan itself is a fascinating symbol, historically a tool of flirtation and secrecy, a language of gesture that transcends mere utility. From ancient Egyptian royalty depicted with fans made of feathers, to its delicate, yet rigid form as it appears in paintings of Japanese geishas, the fan is an accoutrement of elegance, and a barrier. Here, she holds the fan up, in a gesture that implies both allure and coyness. What does she conceal and what does she reveal? In the dance between exposure and concealment, we glimpse the intricate play of social performance, revealing the cyclical return of archetypes in fashion and expression. The past echoes in her gaze.
