Stanley William Hayter made this print, Night and Day, at some point in his career. Right away, you notice how Hayter isn’t afraid to throw down some vibrant color; the orange pops right out at you, contrasted with these moody blues and greens. It's all about letting the process lead the way. When you get up close, you can really see the textures and marks he’s made. It’s as if you’re looking at a landscape of the mind. The lines feel so free and energetic, like he’s carving into the plate with a real sense of play. Look at how those fine white lines hover over the composition, almost like a veil, or a spider’s web. They create a sense of depth and movement, drawing you into the unknown. Hayter reminds me of Joan Miró, they both play with abstraction and surreal imagery, but Hayter has this incredible sense of depth and line that sets his work apart. This piece is not about answers, but about embracing the questions.
