This is a detail from Facundus' "Last Judgement," created around 1050. The manuscript page, rich in tempera, presents a powerfully structured vision of divine reckoning. The composition is divided into distinct registers, each with a different emotional tone. The figures are arranged in layered horizontal bands with the saved above and the damned below. Flatness of the picture plane and stylized figures contribute to a symbolic rather than realistic representation. The bright palette of yellow, red, and blue intensifies the spiritual drama, while the carefully delineated figures stand as formal signs within a semiotic system. The upper register shows Christ in Majesty, flanked by angels. Below, we see rows of figures awaiting judgement, and at the bottom, the graphic depiction of bodies being consumed by hellfire. Notice how Facundus uses line and color to create a structured hierarchy of salvation and damnation, reflecting the theological determinism of his time. This image invites us to consider the formal means by which medieval artists conveyed profound spiritual messages.
