Bowling 2001

Curator: Well, hello there. Immediately, the visual quietude of Sam Gilliam's "Bowling" speaks volumes to me. Painted in 2001, it’s almost meditative, don't you think? Editor: Meditative, yes, if your meditation involves staring at something impeccably balanced! I mean, the composition—it’s symmetrical but with just enough variation in the color fields to keep your eyes dancing. Curator: Dancing is right! The acrylic sings. Gilliam really coaxes a gorgeous harmony out of greens and blues. Look at the overlaying of geometric shapes, the suggestion of movement and depth, with a flattening, it really pulls at my painterly heartstrings.
