Editor: This engraving, "Portrait of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough," made sometime between 1701 and 1731 by Pieter van Gunst, has a real sense of imposing grandeur. He looks powerful, in his armor, against what seems to be a battle scene in the background. What do you make of it? Curator: Oh, this! To me, it whispers tales of ambition, doesn't it? Look at the composition. Marlborough isn't just *standing* there; he’s *commanding* attention. And those flowing robes, that absurdly magnificent wig - they're not about comfort, darling, they're about constructing an image. It's Baroque excess turned up to eleven. The inscription, that elaborate Latin, serves as a frame that invites us to recognize him as a classical hero of sorts. Does the theatrical backdrop evoke specific military victories, do you think, or something more? Editor: Hmm, I didn't consider the inscription as framing the image like that... interesting! I see your point about the excess, especially with that wig. Do you think the artist was trying to subtly critique that aspect of the Duke? Curator: A critique? Perhaps, my dear! Or perhaps it was simply mirroring the times, indulging in the dramatic flair that defined the era. Remember, portraiture then was about crafting a legacy, building a brand if you will. But, isn’t there always an interesting dance between flattery and subtle commentary when portraying those in power? Van Gunst has walked the tightrope skillfully, wouldn’t you say? Editor: I see the tightrope walk now. Thanks, I definitely have a new appreciation for how carefully these images were constructed! Curator: My pleasure. It's been grand, haven't we learned to never judge a Duke by his wig. Or maybe… always judge them?
