Curator: This is Bernard Picart's portrait of Eugene Francois, Prince of Savoy. What strikes you about it? Editor: The Prince's armor and the battle scene in the background feel grand and powerful. But the elaborate wig and ornate text make it feel very much of its time. How does this image function within its historical context? Curator: It’s a study in power, isn't it? The armor and battlefield are deliberate, constructing a martial image. The inscription reinforces his titles, solidifying his position within society. What are the politics of this image? Editor: So it's about image management as much as historical record? That makes me wonder what wasn't shown. I hadn’t considered the strategic purpose of such portraits before. Curator: Exactly. Consider the institutions that commissioned and displayed such works. Power is often carefully constructed and visually projected.
