Dadamaino made "238 combinazioni cromatiche con 16 colori moltiplicati fra loro" with, well, 16 colors multiplied! I like how this piece embraces the idea of artmaking as a process. The diamond shapes create this overall sense of playful depth. It's not quite flat, but it's not illusionistic either. Look at how the squares are filled with two diamond shapes, sometimes in complimentary colours, which creates a dizzying visual effect. The paint is applied in neat, even layers, with little or no texture. The brushwork is so smooth you barely notice it! What's interesting is how each small colour combination is simple enough on its own, but overall the multiplication of colour creates something almost overwhelming. You can feel echoes of the mathematical, systematic approach of artists like Sol LeWitt, but with a warm human touch. Dadamaino makes you think about how even simple, repeated shapes can produce endless variety.
