Sarah Morris made 'Box' with paint, though when, I'm not sure. Right away, I notice how each shape seems perfectly self-contained, yet they all push against one another, like a city. I'm drawn to the surface; it's so smooth. I wonder about the touch that made this. Was it a brush, or perhaps something else? The colors, those teals, pinks, and yellows, they aren't blended or muddied, and I find that kind of refreshing. Look at how a brown square sits next to an orange triangle, that combo shouldn't work, but somehow it does! It's this oddball combination that keeps my eye moving. Morris reminds me a bit of someone like Bridget Riley, but with an added sense of urban chaos. It's less about perfection and more about the organized messiness of a city block. It’s a testament to how art doesn’t need to provide easy answers, it just needs to keep the conversation going.
